13 Reasons Why season 3: ‘I was nauseous’ Monty star speaks out on rape scene controversy

13 Reasons Why was hit by a huge wave of criticism after Tyler Down’s (played by Devin Druid)rape scene aired on Netflix last May.

The disturbing scene showed Tyler Down beaten and raped with a mop handle by fellow student Monty de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos).

The graphic scene caused many fans to call for the cancellation of the Netflix drama, with showrunners arguing it raises awareness to an important issue.

With season three being released today, Monty De La Cruz actor Timothy Granaderos has revealed his reaction to the scene and promises season three will be less controversial.

The Monty star said the third instalment “feels like a different show” and will provoke far less uproar than previous outings.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Timothy begun: “I don’t think you’ll be asking if any scenes will need to be removed from season three.

“[Season three is] not the same as the past two seasons.

The actor made reference to both Tyler Down’s rape scene and the graphic season one scene of Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langsford) suicide that saw Mental health charities campaign for it’s removal.

Two years later, Netflix cut the scene on the advice of medical experts, but the Monty actor doesn’t seem to think history will repeat itself.

He continued: “I don’t think you’ll be asking me the same questions about the two prior scenes.”

“There are definitely scenes that are wild but I don’t think you’ll be asking if any scenes will need to be removed from season three.”

He added that while he hasn’t heard anything about Netflix removing the mop scene, he said watching it made him feel “nauseous,” too.

“I didn’t expect it, but I got kind of nauseous, and my stomach was churning after watching it,” he said. “To be honest, I would expect that reaction from people.”

The actor went on to tease the show’s new direction as the murder mystery takes over the school.

He continued: “It’s absolutely a different thing. Right off the get-go you know it is a murder-mystery, the stakes are very high and everyone is a suspect.

“So, I think fans will be left questioning who they thought they were loyal to.

“It’s going to take off really quickly. Within the first episode or two you’re going to be engaged trying to put the mystery together.

“But I think that’s the fun of season three. It definitely feels like a different show.”

13 Reasons Why season 3 is available to stream now on US Netflix and 8AM UK Time.
