Black hole shock: Scientist's dire warning over humans being 'extruded like toothpaste'

A black hole is a region of spacetime exhibiting gravitational acceleration so strong that it has been said nothing can escape, not even light. American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has a damning prospect for life on Earth, should one ever approach the Blue Planet. He revealed how the human body would suffer something known in science as “spaghettification”.

Dr Tyson told the audience of the Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, how the terrifying ordeal would play out.

He said in 2008: “The point comes where you snap into two – likely to happen at the base of your spine – now you are two pieces.

“It turns out you will survive that snap because below your waist, while there are important organs, there are no vital organs.

“So your torso will stay alive for a little while, until you bleed to death, but it all happens much faster.

“The two pieces then feel tidal forces and they snap into two pieces and they snap again into eight and then 16.

“Eventually it’s your head and multiple other parts.”

Dr Tyson went on to detail how the human body will eventually become one continuous piece of matter.

He added: “So that will continue until you are a stream of atoms descending towards the abyss.”

“That’s not the worst part, because the fabric of space and time funnels down towards a black hole.

JUST IN: New state of matter has just been discovered

“So the space that you occupy up here is larger than the space you occupy down here.

“So, in fact, while you’re getting stretched, you’re getting squeezed, extruded through the fabric of space like toothpaste through a tube.”

Dr Tyson went on to reveal the scientific term for the process, before adding in a joke.

He continued: “Now, we have a word for that, it’s called spaghettification, invented for just this purpose.

“One thing we’re good at in English is having words for ways to die.“

Dr Tyson previously revealed why human’s face little chance of survival should a black hole suck up Earth.

He said in 2008: “The gravity of the black hole is extreme, light doesn’t even escape.

“The escape velocity is so high, the speed of light is not good enough, so if light doesn’t come out, nothing is coming out.

“You fall in, you’re not coming out – it’s a one-way trip.

“Initially it feels like a stretch, it’s cosmic yoga, but then the stretch continues beyond the comfort level.”
