Stunning moment a meteorite fireball lights up the sky as it crashes towards Earth – Video

The footage of the fireball landing was recorded from a car’s dashcam on an Italian island of Sardina. The video was caught by a driver who was briefly blinded by the event as he travelled on a road near Torre Grande on the Mediterranean Island on Friday. The stunning footage shows the meteorite quickly come into the shot as a bright light careening towards the Earth at the moment it was violently torn apart by the planet atmosphere.

As it gets closer, the space rock begins to emit a bright and blinding light as the spectacular show lit up the entire countryside as it blazed across the night sky.

It has been reported that the spectacle was witnessed in numerous coastal areas along the Mediterranean.

The Puig des Molins Observatory in Ibiza also captured the rock’s descent from a different angle.

The Catalan Civil Protection agency reported receiving more than 55 calls about the fireball.

Meteorites rarely cause concern for NASA and other agencies that monitor the skies due to the rocks initial size being greatly diminished as it enters the Earths atmosphere.

However, NASA has taken steps towards studying and protecting the earth from Asteroids it considers hazardous.

Earlier this year NASA announced its first Planetary Defense Technology Demonstration for the next 3 years.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) will be NASA’s first mission to demonstrate a planetary defence technique.

Millions of meteoroids travel through the Earths atmosphere every day and often leaving behind a trail as it is vaporised.

Most meteorites are one of three types: stony, stony-iron, or iron. These compositions tell us where the meteoroid existed in its parent body.

An iron or stony-iron was close to the core of an asteroid, while a stony object was closer to the surface.
