Chelsea boss Frank Lampard had a surprise club legend in stands watching his home debut

Lampard made no secret of his desire to manage at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea manager one day after calling time on his playing career.

Not even he though that opportunity would arise so soon into his managerial career, but following Maurizio Sarri’s departure in the summer he became the first choice.

His first game as manager in the Premier League was a baptism of fire away at Manchester United as the Red Devils ran riot to win 4-0.

Then Chelsea suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Super Cup to Liverpool on penalties.

But Lampard would have certainly had on eye on his first home game as Chelsea manager against Leicester on Sunday.

And Chelsea fans too were keen to show their support for the club legend, cheering Lampard’s name before kick-off.

But there was also a surprise fellow Chelsea legend in the stands watching Lampard’s home debut as Chelsea boss – John Terry.

The 38-year-old is currently the assistant head coach at Aston Villa with the club yet to pick up a point through two games.

However, it’s clear Terry still has strong allegiances to both Chelsea and his long-term friend and former team-mate Lampard.

The duo won an incredible three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League alongside each other along with a host of other trophies.

Terry has been touted as a future Chelsea boss after announcing his retirement a year ago, and there was even mention of him being brought in this summer instead of Lampard.

But the former England captain was fully supportive of the move Chelsea decided to go with.

“After the season he has had with Derby and with Chelsea’s transfer ban in place, there is no-one better equipped than Frank to succeed at Chelsea,” he said in the summer.

“It is perfect timing for him and the club. Frank was under pressure to succeed at Chelsea the day he arrived from West Ham and he never hid from that.

“He revelled in it and went on to become Chelsea’s greatest-ever player.

He added: “I don’t believe there will be any trepidation from supporters. They love him.

“Lamps is a legend and now is the right time for him to come home.”
