England ended Wales’ 14-match unbeaten run last weekend at Twickenham in the first of four warm-up matches for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

But heading to Cardiff they knew they were going to be up against with Wales not tasting defeat at home in nearly two years.

Eddie Jones was dealt a blow early in the day with Ruaridh McConnochie having to withdraw with a muscle strain.

Wales meanwhile had a late change at the back with Leigh Halfpenny coming in to the starting line-up in place of Liam Williams.

There was a teasing carrot for both teams entering the game, as both England and Wales had the chance to rise to the top of the world rankings.

England needed to win by 15 points or more to achieve the feat, but they took too long to get going and soon found themselves with a mountain to climb.

Wales were on the front foot early on and quickly found themselves 10-0 thanks in no part to the boot of Dan Biggar.

The 29-year-old first booted over for the first three points of the game before hitting a delightful kick into the hands of George North to take it over the line for the only try of the game.

George Ford helped cut the deficit after the break with two penalties as England began to take control of the game.

However, Leigh Halfpenny struck the decisive penalty on his return from injury to hand England their first defeat in the Rugby World Cup warm-up games.

Wales will now overtake New Zealand at the top of the rankings when they’re released on Monday – the first time they have done so since 2003.
