Game of Thrones: Sansa's future revealed – The Stark Queen will NEVER have TWO things

It was one of the sweetest victories and a hugely fan-pleasing moment. After years of suffering and heartbreak as every illusion and safety was stripped from her, Sansa Stark emerged strong, powerful and in total command of her own destiny. It is perhaps best not to dwell on quite how easy it was for her to tell the new King Bran and gathered lords of Westeros that she was off to reestablish The North as a separate kingdom – but no-one can deny she was the right person to sit on that throne. However, there are still two more major sacrifices to make.

As the storylines progressed it was increasingly clear Sansa was being moulded onto a Westerosi version of Queen Elizabeth I – and not just for the imagery and red hair. Actress Sophie Turner reinforced it in a recent interview.

The legendary British monarch certainly resembles the later regal imagery of Sansa Stark, but she also fought her way through a difficult adolescence and a terrifying period when she feared for her life under an increasingly unstable Queen (her half-sister Mary) who saw her as a direct threat.

Elizabeth I is also the only British queen to prove her mettle leading troops (symbolically armoured) into battle as the nation faced the incoming Spanish Armada.

Centuries before Queen Victoria and Elizabeth II with their Prince Consorts, Elizabeth I also realised taking a husband would dimish her power and independence. The ‘Virgin Queen’ never married and ruled absolutely for decades.

Sansa looks set to do the same.

Asked what she saw ahead for the character, Turner told the LA Times: “No wars, no battles. I see her leading until she’s very old. I don’t see her getting married or having children. I think it would be a democratic kind of kingdom. She’d die of old age, very happy.”

Sansa, of course, has experienced one horrifying engagement to Joffrey, an unwilling engagement to Tyrion and then the appalling marriage to Ramsay Bolton. No wonder she has no desire to marry again.

The HBO costume team also signalled how Sansa’s evolving wardrobe symbolised her physical separation. The increasingly tight garments, tough fabrics and numerous belts and buckles all symbolise a woman who wanted to keep her body as unobtainable and protected as possible. In a world where courtly women and even queens still dressed to maximise their appeal, Sansa has completely taken that out of the equation.

It makes perfect sense. However, there is one problem.

Sansa is theoretically the last remaining Stark at Winterfell.

Bran is now king of a different kingdom and is apparently sterile. Arya is sailing West and has given the impression she will never return. Jon remains a bastard in public, with few aware of his true parentage, and is also exiled to the Night’s Watch and under oath to father no children.

Who will succeed Sansa if she takes no husband?
