Chesney Hawkes, the English singer, is joining Pointless Celebrities on BBC One this evening. The 1990s special sees presenters Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman welcoming a host of celebs onto the programme. Tonight’s episode features Colin Jackson and Roger Black, Rowetta and Tony Mortimer, Tim Vincent and Anna Ryder Richardson, and Kirsten O’Brie and Chesney Hawkes. Hawkes is best known for his single The One and Only, which topped the UK Singles Chart, and reached the Top 10 in the United States.
With such a famous song to his name, how much wealth has Hawkes accrued during his career?
According to website Celebrity Net Worth, Chesney Hawkes has a net worth of $10 million (£8.2million).
Hawkes has previously spoken of how he wasn’t particularly sensible with his money when he first shot to fame.
He told The Telegraph in a 2015 interview that he was “living in the now” and spending rather than saving his earnings.
“My income started to dry up a couple of years after I had the big success with The One and Only,” Hawkes told the newspaper.
“My record label dropped me, and I’d been spending way too much money. I remember buying all my family a car, a studio… I wasn’t very sensible about money.
“I’d bought a house in west London and I was at a point where I couldn’t afford to even pay the mortgage. I was only about 23 at the time.”
He added that he missed some mortgage payments and ended up in his bank overdraft.
“I was probably £20,000 in debt at the worst point,” singer Hawkes told The Telegraph.
The Briton said his financial situation had been “embarrassing” but he managed to get out of his debt thanks to a friend renting a room from him, getting a publishing deal and then meeting his “more sensible’ wife.
Hawkes has been married to Kristina Hawkes since 1997. They have three children together.
Pointless Celebrities is far from Hawkes’ first foray into television. The singer briefly appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2009.
He took part in the BBC series Let’s Dance For Comic Relief in 2011 followed by the ITV series Sing If You Can.
Hawkes was also due to take part on ITV’s Dancing on Ice in 2012 but after fracturing his ankle, he had to pull out.
In 2015, the singer competed in Celebrity MasterChef on BBC One but was eliminated in the first of the semi-finals of the show.
