Stuart Broad plays down Jofra Archer expectations after England star’s first Test wicket

Archer took his first Test wicket on another rain affected day in the second Specsavers Ashes Test when removing pinning Cameron Bancroft lbw in his sixth over.

But while Broad insisted the young fast bowler has “all the attributes” to succeed, England’s second most successful Test bowler said that England fans must give Archer time to learn his trade at the highest level.

“Jofra has got all the attributes and is already a successful international cricketer and there are times when he will blow teams away,” he said.

“It was a bit of a learner for him this morning maybe a yard too short for all of us until we made a conscious effort to get it fuller but that was a bit of getting used to the slope in red ball cricket.

“That said he showed great control, bowls a nice nagging length and there were no doubts he had the attributes to be a Test cricketer.”

England were restricted to just one session before rain intervened.

But it was enough to take three wickets as Archer’s maiden Test wicket prompted a slump from 60-1 to 71-4 before Steve Smith and Matthew Wade took them to 80-4 at lunch.

Australia trail England by 178 with six wickets remaining.

Despite losing five sessions in the first three days, Broad insisted all three result outcomes were still possible with good weather forecast for the weekend.

“We are pretty positive,” said Broad when asked how he assessed the match situation. “We would need to bowl Australia out by lunch but there is 98 overs a day which has been enough for both sides to bowl each other out hasn’t it?

“There is certainly hope for both sides and there could be an intriguing game for both sides.

“We need six wickets by lunch and then ideally bat till an hour half and hour before lunch on day five and try and force a result that way.”

Broad added Travis Head to his wicket from the previous evening, pinning the Australia vice captain lbw for seven. Earlier Chris Woakes had enticed the set Usman Khawaja into a lazy prod outside off stump in the over after Archer’s strike.

Ben Stokes thought he had Wade in just before lunch only for the batsman to successfully challenge a lbw decision from Aleem Dar, replays showing the ball pitching outside leg stump.

The wicket England really craved remained in tact with Steve Smith unbeaten on 13 at the close.
