Liverpool legend explains why Man Utd’s Wan-Bissaka is better than Alexander-Arnold

Wan-Bissaka joined Manchester United from Crystal Palace in the summer for £50million.

The 21-year-old is yet to win a senior England cap, with the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier ahead of him.

But he impressed enough at Palace last season for United to splash out for his services.

Nicol says defensively Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold still has plenty of improvement to make.

However, he admits the Reds academy graduate is better going forward than Wan-Bissaka.

Alexander-Arnold contributed 12 assists in the Premier League last season, compared to Wan-Bissaka’s three.

“Wan-Bissaka [is the better defender],” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“Going forward, with the ball at his feet, Trent Alexander-Arnold is arguably the best right-back in the country.

“Going forward with the ball at his feet.

“But one-on-one defending and positional sense, he has some work to do. He has some work to do.

So which right-back would Nicol prefer to have in his team?

“It depends on the makeup of my team,” he continued.

“If my team’s about being solid defensively, then I’m taking Wan-Bissaka.

“If it’s about attacking, then you go for Alexander-Arnold.”

Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Southampton (3pm).

United meanwhile visit Wolves on Monday (8pm).
