Vikings season 6 ending: Showrunner reveals real reason series has to end

Vikings fans were disappointed to find out the Amazon Prime hit will come to an end after season six, after the fifth outing teased a number of huge storylines still to be played out.

The sixth outing is set to be explosive as fans will see how Bjorn’s (played by Alexander Ludwig) new leadership plays out and the challenges to power he will face.

However, with the show airing just 20 final episodes, fans are wondering why the story is coming to an end.

The show’s creator Hirst finally gave fans the answers they needed in a recent interview, revealing why season six was a good place to close the door.

In conversation with Variety, Michael said: “I always knew where I wanted the show to go and more or less where it would end if I was given the opportunity.

“What I was trying to do was write the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. After six seasons and 89 episodes, that’s what I felt — finally — I’d done.

“We stopped shooting the final episode in November last year and I felt that I’d said all I needed to say about Ragnar and his sons.”

Moreover, the showrunner also revealed what’s to come in the final season, teasing an emotional rollercoaster of a finale as a number of tragedies are set to take place.

Michael continued: “We visit three new worlds in those episodes, we go through great tragedies and great heroism, and if you have tears to weep be prepared to weep them as you watch Season 6.

“I’m very proud of the show. I did what I wanted to do, that’s the truth.”

Although the show is on its final season, the showrunner teased there is plenty more to come as fans are set for the most “ambitious” and “intensely emotional” scenes yet.

Michael added: “I don’t want people to think the show is ending anytime soon because it’s not. Later this year we’ll see the first part of Season 6.

“I’m desperate for people to see it because it is the most ambitious and intensely emotional episodes of Vikings ever… So we have new worlds, new landscapes, new characters… and the scope just seems to be bigger.

“As are a lot of the issues. We’re on a world stage now with the Vikings, so everything is greater and more significant. And I swear to all the fans. It is a truly, deeply, emotional experience so I look forward to people watching it.”

It seems as though fans can expect plenty more deaths in what is set to be an emotional finale, but which of the fan-favourites will be killed off in the finale?

The showrunner spoke out after fns picked up on a number of hints that Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) will die in the final outing.

A recent interview with Torvi star Georgia Hirst seemed to suggest she will take over as the show’s female lead after leaked images seemed to reveal Lagertha’s death.

The star teased a much more active role next season, Georgia said: “I kick so much a*** in this season, it’s crazy. There’s a lot of changing relationships, a lot of tears, a lot of killing, a lot of new faces.”

“She is with Ubbe which was established before but now we’re in a committed relationship. Torvi and Ubbe are preparing to sign up with Alfred.”

Vikings season 6 is coming to Amazon and History soon.
