Louise Minchin: BBC Breakfast star addresses feeling ‘vulnerable’ before major change

Most recently, BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin, 50, competed in the Norseman triathlon to raise money for the charity Mind.

In what she described as her “toughest challenge yet”, Louise took part in a 2.5-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, followed by a marathon.

Speaking after getting back into her fitness and competing in the tough challenge, Louise admitted she now feels “less vulnerable”.

In her column with The Times, she said: “My last few years of constant exercise have changed me physically and mentally.

“I am fitter, stronger and more resilient than I was in my twenties, thirties or early forties — and I am finally proud of my muscly shoulders.

“It has also helped me feel happier, less vulnerable and to be a better version of myself while going through a tricky menopause.”

In the same interview, Louise Minchin admitted to disliking her figure in her younger years.

She added: “Growing up I had been different. I had loved sport, particularly swimming.

“I would, if I could, spend hours lapping any pool available. I loved to train and loved to race.

“But, aged 15, I gave it up. I looked in the mirror, decided I didn’t like my muscly shoulders, and stopped swimming just like that,” she explained.

Louise got back into physical challenges when she took part in the BBC Breakfast presenters’ Christmas Challenge seven years ago.

The mother-of-two and her co-stars went head-to-head cycling in Manchester’s Velodrome.

Louise and her co-star Charlie Stayt, now 57, won the competition, which inspired her to get back into sport.

Elsewhere, Louise recently opened up dealing with the menopause in a candid chat with Hello! Magazine.

Dan Walker’s co-star said she has taken control of the BBC Breakfast studio’s air conditioning, to accommodate her hot flushes.

“The studio is really cold now – we have the ‘Louise’ setting on the air conditioning,” she told the publication.

Louise first opened up about the affects of her menopause earlier this year, telling fans her symptoms started for her three years ago.

In a clip shared with her 162,000 followers, she added: “Noticeable symptoms would be waking up at night as if I’d been running a marathon in a tropical rainforest. I mean, hot beyond belief.”

She continued: “It was a GP friend of mine who said, ‘Actually do you know this could be the onset of menopause, have you thought about that?’ And I was taken aback, I thought, ‘I’m 47!’”.

Louise added her biggest challenge of dealing with the menopause was not feeling herself a lot of the time.

She said: “I think what’s upsetting about it is I don’t feel all the time, like myself. I feel like this kind of anxious, worried, sometimes quite low version of myself.

“I’m much more anxious about things I would never normally be anxious about.”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One.
