DJ Arafat dead: Ivory Coast singer killed in road traffic accident aged 33

DJ Arafat, real name Ange Didier Huoun, died aged 33 after being admitted to hospital in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, according to African publication Jeune Afrique. State broadcaster RTI reported that social media posts said he had been driving his motorcycle when he collided with a car. They said he had been left with a fractured skull. A doctor at Polyclinique des Deux Plateaux in Abidjan, where DJ Arafat was transported to, told Jeune Afrique: “He was admitted to the emergency room in a vegetative state. He had a skill fracture and oedema.”

The doctor, who asked to remain anonymous, said medics had tried to revive the Moto Moto singer “in vain”.

The Ivory Coast Culture Minister Maurice Kouakou Bandaman gave his condolences to DJ Arafat’s fans and family, saying a tribute would be arranged to honour him.

Nigerian music Davido mourned the loss of DJ Arafat on Instagram, sharing a picture of the pair of them together with his 12 million followers and writing: RIP YOROBO I LOVE YOU!”

DJ Arafat was known for his coupé-decalé dance music.

He released 11 albums over the course of his career.

In both 2016 and 2017 he won the award for coupé-decalé Artist of the year.

He achieved global recognition with Moto Moto, the music video for which has over 4 million view on YouTube to date.
