Why criticism of Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unfair as Chelsea comparison made

That’s the verdict of his former team-mate Ben Thornley, who has been left surprised at the treatment Solskjaer has received before his first full season in charge kicks off.

After Manchester United failed to bring in a midfielder and additional attacker before the transfer deadline, there are concerns surrounding their credentials for a top four finish.

Nonetheless, the club have brought in three strong additions in Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James and according to Thornley, there is no need for some of the negativity surrounding the club at the moment.

“It’s amazing for me that an ex-player, who knows the club extremely well, has faced so much criticism, certainly when United went on that run from March until the end of the season,” he told Tribal Football.

“Let’s have it right, these were exactly the same players who performed so unbelievably well from when Solskjaer first took charge at Cardiff before Christmas up until the international break, and then all the criticism was aimed at ‘is Ole up to it?’, and yet, Frank Lampard has got the job at Chelsea and everybody thinks it’s a fabulous appointment. And the difference is what?

“He’s an ex-player whose had very, very little experience, if not much less experience in management than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he’s gone back to a huge club and nobody seems to have batted an eyelid and thinks it’s a wonderful appointment.

“And I’m not saying it’s not, but I just don’t understand why Ole Gunnar has taken so much flak when he’s an identical position [to Frank Lampard].”

Lampard will take charge of his first ever Premier League match on Sunday at Old Trafford and he’ll be looking to get off the mark in style.

The former Chelsea midfielder is working inside an incredibly positive atmosphere given that they have not been able to sign players this summer, besides Mateo Kovacic.

There is no instant pressure on him to succeed and the Stamford Bridge hierarchy know they may have to change their boom-or-bust approach to bring some stability.

Solskjaer seems as if he is already up against it, particularly after his side finished last season in alarming form.

He is hoping that youngster Mason Greenwood will be able to fill the boots of Romelu Lukaku, who joined Inter Milan on deadline day.

Solskjaer is backing Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to lead the line in style.

“I’m very confident that we’ll get goals from Martial and Rashford,” said Solskjaer.

“Daniel James will come in and create, and Jesse Lingard will also get more.”
