Princess Margaret’s topless snap for Lord Snowdon – truth behind THAT racy The Crown scene

Princess Margaret, who was portrayed by Vanessa Kirby in the Netflix series, struck up a romance with Antony Armstrong-Jones in the second season of The Crown.

After meeting the photographer at a party she heads to his studio and he lowers her dress for a racy shoot so she appeared topless.

The portrait appeared on the front page of national newspapers in the show leading to outrage from her sister Queen Elizabeth (played by Claire Foy).

But what’s the truth behind that racy snap? Did Princess Margaret really pose topless for Lord Snowdon?

The photograph taken in The Crown, is in fact a recreation of one of the most famous portraits of Princess Margaret.

While in the show the royal appears topless in the snap in the newspaper, she did not ditch her clothing.

The lower neckline of her clothing gives the illusion that she was naked or topless due to her bare shoulders.

And, the real image was in fact taken by Lord Snowdon for her 1959 birthday portrait.

Princess Margaret’s portrait in The Crown also bares a very striking resemblance to another photo taken by her husband after they wed.

A shot from 1967 shows her also shows her with bare shoulders but her face is framed in darkness.

The third season of The Crown is set to air later this year on Netflix and will no doubt focus closely on Princess Margaret’s marriage to Lord Snowdon.

Helena Bonham Carter has taken over the role of the royal and recent images from set have shown her fully settled into the role.

One shot of the actress as Princess Margaret sees her looking away from an unknown character and staring at her cigarette.

Her dark locks are tied back as she sports a blue hat and a dark green coat.

Filming snaps have also seen Helena filming alongside Harry Treadway, who takes on the role of Roddy Llewellyn.

The pair can be seen sitting in the back of a car being driven somewhere.

But they appear to be in a tense exchange with Princess Margaret with a stern look on her face as Roddy looks into the distance with n equally cold expression.

Other images from the set have shown the two disembarking from an aeroplane and walking through a group of paparazzi and journalists.

It is thought the scene is meant to depict the moment they returned home from Mustique back in 1976.

The Crown season 3 returns to Netflix later this year.
