Outlander podcast release date, hosts: When does the Clan Lands podcast start?

The Droughtlander won’t be ending any time soon after US network Starz announced Outlander season five would be hitting screens in 2020 rather than at the end of this year like previous runs. To tide viewers over until the return of the time travel series, fans can tune in to a podcast inspired by Outlander. The podcast called Clan Lands features lead star Sam Heughan – better known as Jamie Fraser – and actor Graham McTavish, who portrayed Dougal MacKenzie before his untimely demise.

Clan Lands was first announced back in May by the two actors as they started getting to work on researching the podcast.

McTavish and Heughan also spoke about the podcast in July with the former tweeting: “Great meeting up with this guy again @SamHeughan Get ready for “Clanlands” our podcast about the history, clans and landscape of Scotland. Coming soon!!…….#podcast #scotland.”

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to McTavish about the upcoming podcast and what fans can expect.

When will the Outlander podcast Clan Lands be released?

Sadly, there’s no release date for the podcast as yet.

McTavish said: “We haven’t decided that yet because it will take all of September to do it, so I would expect that it will either come out towards the end of the year or early in the new year.

“We’re going to be recording it in September and obviously we’ll edit it and everything like that,” McTavish explained, adding: “I’m not sure when it will be coming out.”

So what is the podcast about? “I’m going to be with [Heughan] in Scotland and we’re going to be travelling all over Scotland and exploring the history of Scottish clans, feuds, their landscape, the stories that are stranger than any fiction, and the stories that shows like Outlander are partly based on.”

McTavish added: “So I’d be the history guy and Sam will be the outdoors guy and I think it’ll be a really interesting combination.”

The 58-year-old actor, who has also starred in AMC series Preacher and Lucifer, described Clan Lands as as a cross between “The Trip meets some kind of strange Bear Grylls experience”.

He explained there would be a series of podcasts rather than just a one-off show.

The duo will be initially doing six instalments exploring a different clan each time.

“From the physical, logistical point of view we’ll be starting with six different clans and obviously, the MacKenzies will be one of them and the Frasers and a few others.

“They are truly more extraordinary than you can imagine. The story of Scottish clans. There was a saying that Scotland was born fighting and the stories of these clans is a testament to that fact. So it’ll be action-packed and interesting and fun.

“We’re going to have some special guests who we’re going to be visiting along the way and we’ll be going to some great locations. We’re going to stat with six and go from there. We’re very excited about it.”

Explaining how the idea came about, McTavish said both he and Heughan had “independent interests in Scotland”.

While Heughan has a love for the land, his was more about the history, but admitted that the two things informed each other in the formation of Scotland.

Heughan got in touch with him about the possibility of doing a podcast and asked if McTavish would like to come on board.

Ever since May, when the podcast was first unveiled, the pair have been working away on researching the material and speaking to experts.

McTavish commented: “We want to create a feeling on spontaneity and Sam and I both love to talk, so it will scripted to some degree but a lot of it will be improvised on the day and so we’ll be having conversations around in pubs, around the fire, over a whisky, over a beer, on hikes and rowing across lochs.

“It will be outdoors and indoors, lots, lots of fun. A few kilts thrown in, a camping expedition. It will be quite freeform.”

Outlander season 5 will be premiering in 2020 on Amazon Prime and Starz and the Clan Lands podcast is expected to be launching soon
