Free Meek follows the story of 32-year-old US rapper Meek Mill.

The rapper has worked with artists like Drake and Jay-Z as well as dating fellow rapper Nicki Minaj for two years.

Alongside his artistic success, Mill is a campaigner for criminal justice reform in the US.

His campaigning comes from his own experience with the justice system after he was first convicted back in 2008.

At the time he was convicted for drug dealing and gun possession and sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison.

Since his release, the rapper has been on probation and has been back to prison several times for violating this.

Now his original conviction has been overturned but Mill is waiting for his alleged 2008 offence to be retired.

The documentary follows the rapper in his journey for justice reform for his own case as well as others.

The series features executive producer Jay-Z who is seen in the trailer, saying: “This guy got locked up at 19 and has been on probation for 11 years.”

The show features interviews with Mill as well as some prosecutors familiar with his case.

Throughout the documentary, those involved try to unpick the conviction and what happened to Mill.

The series also examines the movement behind the rapper called #FreeMeek and the 2017 Rally for Meek.

Another of the those interviewed in the trailer says: “As soon as Meek was imprisoned, he became a symbol for criminal justice reform.”

Mill’s fight for criminal reform is ongoing and it was revealed yesterday (Thursday, August 8) that the decision about whether his 2008 conviction will be retired has been delayed until Tuesday, August, 27.
