Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to sign one star if Mario Mandzukic pursuit fails

Manchester United boss Solskjaer is hoping to make Mandzukic his final signing of what has been a hectic transfer window so far.

The Red Devils manager is understood to be content with his side’s business having seen Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire all come in.

But with Romelu Lukaku poised to complete a blockbuster £73million move to Inter Milan, Solskjaer is hoping for a replacement.

Sky Italia say that United are locked in talks with Juventus over a deal that would see Mandzukic make the move to Old Trafford.

The Croatia international has years of experience in his locker.

And he remains ruthless in front of goal, meaning he would be a worthy short-term replacement for Lukaku.

But, should a deal for the 33-year-old fail to make it over the line, United will supposedly go for Fernando Llorente.

The Spain international is a free agent after leaving Tottenham at the end of last season.

Roma have appeared frontrunners for the veteran.

But United could swoop in, with Solskjaer keen to add both goals and experience to his young squad.

Meanwhile, speaking after United signed Maguire from Leicester, Solskjaer admitted he was hoping for more business.

“We still hope one or two deals can be done. We’ve been working on cases for a long time and suddenly the deal can be done when it’s dragging on,” he said.

“As a club we’ve had targets, but as a coach and manager when you go out on the pitch you have to work with the ones you have.

“You can’t think ‘what if he comes’ or ‘if he’s sold’.

“The reality is you have to work with the ones that are there. I’ve never been thinking ‘I’ll play him there but he’s coming in’.

“Everyone who has been in pre-season has a big part to play and most of them have impressed.

”But it (transfer speculation) doesn’t stop (after the deadline) because you still have to plan for the next transfer window and next summer.”

As well as Mandzukic, United have been linked with deals for Paulo Dybala and Inaki Williams.
