Galaxy Watch has just suffered a huge blow, but Samsung could have the ultimate solution

Galaxy Watch is Samsung’s wearable series that launched last year and attempted to challenge the Apple Watch.

While the Galaxy Watch series has so far been embraced by many Android fans, it appears the hardware lineup is still struggling to dethrone the Apple Watch as the world’s most popular wearable of its kind.

Research firm Strategy Analytics recently issued a new report discussing global smartwatch shipments in the second quarter of 2019.

The firm said wearable shipments worldwide grew by 44 percent year over year, reaching 12 million units during the period.

The Apple Watch was said to have a 46.6 percent global smartwatch market share, marking a huge victory for the Cupertino-based firm.

This figure grew by two percent year over year.

Samsung was declared to have a 15.9 percent market share meanwhile, up from 10.5 percent the following year.

Neil Mawston, the Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, declared the Apple Watch “remains a long way ahead” in what is surely a huge blow for Samsung that has been chasing the success of its biggest rival for years.

He said: “Apple shipped 5.7 million smartwatches worldwide in Q2 2019, rising an above-average 50 percent from 3.8 million in Q2 2018.

“Apple Watch remains a long way ahead of the chasing pack and its global smartwatch marketshare has grown to 46 percent this quarter, up from 44 percent a year ago.

“Apple Watch has fended off strong competition from hungry rivals like Fitbit. Apple remains the clear smartwatch market leader.”

Although Samsung continues to lag behind the Apple Watch in terms of smartwatch market share, the South Korean firm could have a solution.

Earlier this week the tech powerhouse revealed its latest wearable venture, the Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 looks extremely similar to the original Galaxy Watch Active but comes with a number of upgrades that make it appealing.

First of all, the device is available in 44 millimetre and 40 millimetre case sizes, ensuring users can get a watch more suited to their wrist.

In addition to alerting owners when they receive a notification, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 also boasts a cavalcade of health and fitness features.

The most poignant of these comes from the device’s ability to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG).

Unfortunately, this feature will not be present on the watch at launch – instead it is expected to arrive in the near future.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 can track more than 39 workouts that include running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing machine, elliptical machine and dynamic workouts.

And of course, the South Korean tech firm is claiming the Active 2 ties into its ecosystem, allowing owners to harness its proprietary services such as Samsung Pay.

The new Galaxy Watch comes in Bluetooth-only and LTE models – its 40 millimetre variant is priced from $280 (£230.49) and its 44 millimetre starts at $300 (£246.96).

Unfortunately, Samsung has not yet revealed precise UK pricing for the wearable.

The hardware will work with Android and iOS devices.
