Andy Murray set to make decision on singles return for the Cincinnati Masters

The former world No.1 has played five doubles tournaments and the Wimbledon mixed doubles with Serena Williams since returning to action after January hip resurfacing surgery.

But the Scot, 32, played his last singles match in a five-set defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Australian Open first round. Now Murray has until 6pm local time (1pm UK time) to enter the singles at a event he won in 2008 and 2011.

After his second round defeat at the Citi Open in Washington last week, Murray said: “If I feel ready, I’ll give it a go. If not, I’ll probably wait until after New York.”

The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, starts on August 26. The world No.116, who has played only three singles matches since stopping another comeback last September, has ruled out playing the final event before Flushing Meadow at the Winston-Salem Open.

Murray and Feliciano Lopez won the doubles title at the Fever-Tree Championships in his comeback tournament in June. But the Scot and the Spaniard suffered their first defeat together in the second round of the Coupe Rogers in Montreal when they went down 2-6 6-3 10-8 to Roland Garros finalists Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer – who celebrated his 38th birthday yesterday – and Jurgen Melzer have been elected to ATP Player Council to replace Robin Haase, Jamie Murray, and Sergiy Stakhovsky who resigned before Wimbledon.
