Stacey Dooley: Loose Women’s Janet Street Porter slams ISIS brides doc amid major error

Today Janet Street Porter, 72, Coleen Nolan, 54, Brenda Edwards, 45, and Andrea McLean, 49, discussed Stacey Dooley’s latest investigative documentary on Loose Women.

Within the episode, which aired last night, the Strictly Come Dancing winner visited camps in Syria to confront ISIS brides about beheadings and the slaughter of aid workers.

But, the presenter struggled to get a detailed account of information as many of the camp residents didn’t want to be on camera.

Today, Janet said she wasn’t “sure” Stacey had the best approach in the show.

She said to her fellow panelists: “Stacey Dooley – the Strictly star – was sent by Panorama to cover the IS brides.

“So you might wonder whether this was a really good choice, personally I feel Stacey is a talented person, but I’m not sure sending her to shout at people through a wire fence is what I call investigative journalism.

“Also, I think, are you going to get the best out of people?”

Janet then went on to highlight reports that the BBC had apologised after Stacey described a Muslim prayer gesture as an “IS salute”.

The raised index finger gesture is a symbol of Tawhid, described as “the unity and uniqueness of God as creator and sustainer of the Universe” by the Oxford Dictionary of Islam.

The BBC re-edited the clip after noticing the mistake and took it off of iPlayer.

Addressing the moment, Janet added: “Now, she’s [Stacey] been criticised because the film had to be re-cut at the last minute because somebody behind her raises a finger and she said it’s the IS salute, whereas in fact it’s the muslim’s call to prayer.

“I blame her producer,” she added, before the clip was shown to viewers.

Describing the gesture, she added: “They are actually telling those women it’s time to pray and as we know muslims pray five times a day.

“This piece of news has attracted quite a lot of comment, some are asking why was she [Stacey] sent?”

She added: “Personally, I think the BBC has some very fine foreign correspondents and editors… they might have got more out of the women in the camp.”

The BBC apologised for the mix up about the gesture, with a spokesman telling BBC news: “We wrongly described a gesture made by women filmed in a Kurdish controlled detention camp in northern Syria as an ‘IS salute’.

“While IS have attempted to adopt this for their own propaganda purposes, for accuracy we should have been clear that many people of Muslim faith use this gesture to signify the oneness of Allah.

“We apologise for this error and have removed this description from the footage.”

Elsewhere in the documentary, a woman from the camp told Stacey she had seen her documentaries and believe they are biased.

After Stacey told the female she sounded “British”, the female responded: “Your media is biased. I watched your documentaries. I watched one on BBC Three about girls and guns.”

Stacey replied: “I made a film about the Yazidi women, you’re right. And those girls, I think they’ve been through hell at the hands of ISIS.”

The woman responded: “We’ve been through hell at the hands of the coalition.”

Another women queried Stacey after the latter said they had turned their back on democracy.

Stacey said: “You knew what ISIS stood for. ISIS slaughtered civilians. ISIS slaughter aid workers who come to help civilians.”

The woman then asked: “Why are we getting blamed for things we haven’t done? We haven’t committed any beheadings or nothing like that.”

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
