Kyle Edmund told what he must do to beat Nick Kyrgios at Rogers Cup

Kyrgios arrived in Canada on Monday after an eventful week in Washington which ended with him winning the Citi Open title.

It was the Australian’s sixth career title and the ideal momentum coming into back-to-back Masters 1000 events.

In contrast, Edmund suffered a disappointing defeat to Peter Gojowczyk in the Citi Open quarter-finals.

The British No 1 has had a disappointing year with a semi-final appearance in Eastbourne being his best result of the season.

Kyrgios and Edmund have played each other just once before with the 24-year-old from Canberra coming out on top.

But Amazon Prime pundit Fleming, who was Great Britain Davis Cup team-mates with Edmund, feels the world no 34 needs to avoid being caught up in the hysteria Kyrgios brings to the court.

He said: “The big question in any match Nick Kyrgios plays is ‘what form of himself is going to be on the court?’

“What has he got left physically and mentally in the tank after Washington?

“It is draining what he went through last week. Every match was an epic, blockbuster popcorn match with crowd engagement.

“It has been a quick turnaround with different conditions here. It is very slow.

“That is what all the players have been saying. A lot of them coming way down in tensions.

“I actually heard Andy’s in the 40s for the first time in his career, 40 pound for tension.

“The balls are really fluffing up so that could be a factor.

“It might possibly play into Kyle’s hands a little bit [and] give him some time on the forehand.

“But Kyle is just going to have to focus on his end of the court. Easier said than done against Kyrgios when he’s chatting to fans about where to serve, when he’s probably having a running argument with the umpire and playing all sorts of shots.

“It’s easy to lose your focus but Kyle’s got to keep his own focus.”
