Dan Evans sends Rogers Cup message to Rafael Nadal after De Minaur win seals first meeting

De Minaur has enjoyed an impressive year on the ATP Tour having won the Atlanta Open last month.

But Evans made a fast start to the match by breaking De Minaur in the first game of the match after an unforced error from the Australian.

Evans had to save two break points to hold onto the early break and took the first set 6-4.

In the second set, De Minaur got in front with a break but Evans fought back and the match went into a tiebreak.

Evans had a match point at 6-5 but put a backhand into the net. He then got another chance to win the match at 7-6 and he sealed the win when De Minaur put a backhand long.

The British star missed out on a fourth-round meeting with Nadal at Wimbledon last month but now has the chance to face the 18-time Grand Slam winner.

“It is going to be great,” Evans told Amazon Prime Sport.

“He is one of the best players to ever walk on the court and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.

“It is a shame it didn’t happen at Wimbledon but there’s no better place to do it than here.”

The match will be Nadal’s first since losing to Roger Federer at Wimbledon last month. And Spaniard says he has learnt how to relax during the breaks between tournaments.

“I’m able to understand how to enjoy more and relax between tournaments,” said Nadal.

“Before when I was losing a match, I wanted to be back home as quick as possible.

“If I’m in Europe, yes, I will [go home], but if I am here, I will not go back if I have to play in two weeks. This is something that would be impossible for me 15 years ago, but I have changed my approach.”
