Coronation Street spoilers: Weatherfield resident hides harrowing secret in return to soap

Asha (played by Tanisha Gorey) has been absent from Coronation Street for the past couple of months after her father Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) took his daughter and her twin brother Aadi Alahan (Zennon Ditchett) to India to visit his dying uncle.

Before her brief exit from the ITV soap, it seemed Asha was facing the turmoils of teenage life as she and best friend Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) started to attract the attention of boys.

With her attentions on social media rather than focussing on her exams, Dev took his visit to India as a way for his daughter to learn about her heritage.

Little does Dev know, his daughter has used the trip to get her hands on some skin lightening cream as Asha has been struggling with how she feels about her appearance.

When Dev returns to the cobbles next week with only Asha in tow, he tells Weatherfield super-nanny Mary Taylor (Patti Claire) his daughter has been playing up a treat.

Not one to pass up an opportunity to do some digging, Mary promises Dev she will get to the bottom of Asha’s wayward behaviour.

After spending the afternoon with Mary, Asha tells her father she has had a lovely day but drops her bag, with the skin lightening cream rolling out.

Before Dev can see what the cream actually is, Asha manages to scoop up the tub and later whilst she’s on her own, the youngster begins applying the contents to her skin.

The issue-based plot will be running over the coming weeks, with Asha buying the skin lightening cream online to keep up her fixation of trying to alter her appearance.

Even though her loved ones are worried about her behaviour, it will take some time before they actually clock on to what’s going on.

When they do realise what Asha has been up to, will the youngster have taken her regime to dangerous and possibly life changing lengths?

The news of the storyline first broke earlier this year, with The Mirror reporting the ITV soap would be working with the British Skin Foundation to accurately reflect the severity of using skin lightening products.

Elsewhere in Weatherfield, Alina Pop’s (Ruxandra Porojnicu) human trafficking storyline reaches a head this week.

Last night’s instalment of the ITV soap saw Alina’s ex-boyfriend Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni) hospitalised after he tried to help the young salon worker escape her captors.

Jan Lozinski (Piotr Baumann) was also brought into the mix, seemingly working with Alina’s captors to continue the illegal crime ring.

Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) looks set to discover exactly what her boyfriend has been up to, but Alina star Ruxandra Porojnicu, 25, has spoken out about the importance of the storyline.

“I’ve had so many messages from people who had no idea that it was happening here,” the soap star told The Daily Star.

“Hopefully people are going to make sure that they know their rights before they travel to another country.

“But I think the Government has the most important part to play in this. They need to make greater communications for people coming here, so that they know their rights.”

With the plot soon to take an explosive turn as Eileen confronts Jan, will everyone make it out the tense scenes alive?

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
