Those looking to buy a commemorative coin can find luck on the website, although some of these coins are selling for much more than face value. Recently, the eBay user “elliolonsdal4” posted a 2017 Peter Rabbit fifty pence piece which had the eye-watering starting price of £6,000. The seller posted the Beatrix Potter Tale of Peter Rabbit 2017 coin online along with two photos of it.

Explaining why the starting price is so high, they said the piece was “rare” and “circulated”.

They added: “The tale of peter rabbit 50p. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class Large Letter.”

Although the commemorative coin may be of interest to a number of people, this is does not necessarily mean it is rare or worth as much as the price tag would suggest.

According to the coin website, Change Checker, the fifty pence as a circulating mintage of 19,900,000.

The coin has been ranked as one on the Scarcity Index, which means it is actually classed as common, and not rare.

Beatrix Potter coins were first released in 2016 to mark 150 years since the birth of the children’s author and they proved so popular more have been released each year since.

The coin on offer was designed by Emma Noble and features a drawing of Peter Rabbit in his iconic blue jacket.
