‘Cut the c**p!’: Piers Morgan in fierce gun control challenge to ‘spineless coward’ Trump

Mr Morgan made his comments after 32 people tragically lost their lives following mass shootings incidents in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. Both attacks took place across a deadly weekend in the United States. His MailOnline column is headlined: “Making America Weep Again – Do you have the guts to stand up to the NRA bullies and ban the weapons of mass murder, Mr President, or are you a spineless coward?”

Mr Morgan praised Trump for some of his comments in the aftermath of the attacks: “Displaying a rare and welcome empathetic tone, he unequivocally condemned white supremacists, denounced hate, racism and bigotry, used the phrase ‘domestic terrorism’ for those who commit such atrocities, criticized violent video games, demanded immediate tougher action to stop the radicalization of people on the internet, and called for bi-partisan solutions to gun violence and for Americans to come together.”

He criticised what he perceived to be Trump’s decision to absolve guns of responsibility in the attacks.

The Good Morning Britain host explained: “If mentally sick or hateful people don’t have guns, they can’t shoot people.

“That’s why mentally sick and hateful people don’t shoot anyone in Japan, which has a greater obsession with violent video games than anywhere but no mass shootings – they can’t get their hands on guns.

“That’s also why, when 16 schoolchildren were shot dead in Britain in the Dunblane massacre of 1996, we banned virtually all guns from civilian hands and haven’t, thank God, suffered a school shooting since then.”

He said that the US gun problem was unique among developed nations, adding: “So let’s cut all the c**p: it’s about the guns.

“Many other countries have the same kind of mental illness, hate, bigotry, white supremacy, violent video games and internet radicalization that Trump referenced.

“But only America offers such easy access to guns.”

According to the Small Arms Survey 2017, the US ranks first for guns per capita with 120.5 guns per 100 persons in the state, the territory in second place in the Falkland Islands with 62.1, almost half of the US figures.

In terms of registered fireman, the US is behind several nations but the survey believes there are believed to be almost 400 million unregistered firemans, second on the list is India with just over 61 million.

India’s population is 1.3 billion, while the US has around 326 million inhabitants.

Mr Morgan concluded his piece by saying he was amazed how easy it was for powerful firearms to be purchased in the US: “So it’s time you grew a pair President Trump, stand up to the NRA and do what REALLY needs to be done.

“As you said today, you banned bump fire stock after the Las Vegas massacre.

“Now you must go much further.”

He added: “That means a ban on assault weapons, a ban on high-capacity magazines, and the introduction of mandatory background checks on all gun purchases.

“Do it now, or stand condemned as a coward.”
