Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issued Paulo Dybala warning because of Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United are working on a swap deal with Juventus that would see Dybala and Romelu Lukaku trade places.

Dybala would be an exciting addition for the Red Devils, with the Argentina international not that long ago regarded as one of the world’s finest forwards.

The 25-year-old scored 22 goals in Serie A in 2017-18 in his role as a supporting striker, while he enjoyed less success when he was moved to a different role last term.

In order to accommodate Cristiano Ronaldo, Dybala found himself shunted out to the right-hand side more often.

He returned just five goals in 30 league games for the Italian champions despite his talents.

And former Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly thinks that, while Dybala would work well in tandem with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, the Argentine is better suited to a central play-making role.

The former Republic of Ireland international insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should take Dybala’s below-par return last season into account when it comes to fitting the former Palermo man into his system should he sign.

“They’re not going to have that ego because they haven’t warranted it yet,” Kelly told Off The Ball of the difference of playing alongside Martial and Rashford compared to lining up as part of an attack containing Ronaldo.

“If Cristiano Ronaldo’s in your team, you’re going to get the ball to him because he’s going to score you goals. That’s what you do, let’s face it.

“Whereas if you have Martial, Rashford and Dybala, on paper that looks very good, it looks like a good front three.

“It looks like there’s goals between the three of them, it’s not just focused on one player.

“But if you’re going on last season, it’s not been his greatest role [on the right side].”

And Kelly actually believes Tottenham – who were linked with an £80m bid for Dybala before United entered talks over a swap deal – would provide an environment where the player could flourish.

“I think he’s a much better fit for Tottenham than he is for Manchester United,” Kelly added.

“Mauricio Pochettino has a system that he would fit into.

“But that would mean [Christian] Eriksen going to fill that [gap].

“I don’t think if you have Eriksen, you’re not going to bring in Dybala because it’s a conflict of interest basically.”
