Harry Maguire moves a step closer to Man Utd transfer announcement after fresh development

Maguire underwent his medical yesterday and is back at the training ground today to complete proceedings.

Maguire will be Manchester United’s third singing of the summer – following Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – and could be ready to make his debut against Chelsea last week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quizzed on the deal last week but asked to get the details sorted before giving too much away.

“Hopefully the last little details will be in place and hopefully we can announce something soon,” he said.

However he will be a United player by the time the transfer window closes after long negotiations with Leicester.

The Foxes stood firm over their valuations and refused to be low balled by United, who have agreed to pay a record-breaking £85m fee.

United and Manchester City made Maguire a priority signing this summer but initially baulked at the price being quotes.

However United have bitten the bullet and agree to pay the money Leicester wanted.

Maguire’s rapid rise from Sheffield United, Hull City, Leicester and now United has impressed many and he is expected to be among the candidates to captain United eventually.

United boss Solskjaer identified Maguire – as did Jose Mourinho last year – as the man to solve their defensive problems after shipping more goals than anyone in the top six last term.

Maguire has impressed over the last two years for club and country as he helped England reach the World Cup and the Nations League semi-finals.

Maguire, 26, made it clear he wanted to move on and test himself at the top level and Brendan Rodgers and Leicester finally agreed to a sale.

Rodgers believes Leicester, who will target Lewis Dunk as a replacement this week, have got a great deal.

“He is a top class player and a great man,” he said.

“There’s been communication between the two clubs, but there’s obviously still a bit to go in terms of Harry’s medical and personal terms.

“It is what it is, he’s a special player, he’s not a player we want to lose but it’s something we’ll see about over the weekend.

“At the moment, the clubs have agreed but there is still more work to do.

“The fee has been agreed for Harry, and we’ll see how the weekend goes. I think it’s an incredible piece of business.

“Everything about Harry over the course of this pre-season – I’ve been involved in this type of situation before where things have been said and whatnot, and things happen to manufacture a deal – this is a guy who knows there’s been interest all the way through the summer.

“He’s been super professional, he’s been with his team-mates right the way through, and he’s been a really really good guy.”
