'That's the kind of person he is' – Pattinson praises Warner for reaction to England fans

The opener has been booed throughout this Test and was goaded about his part in the sandpaper ball tampering scandal by the Hollies Stand.

But team-mate Pattinson maintained he was unaffected by jeers and insisted that he was in good spirits despite his disappointment with the bat.

“With everything that’s gone on with the crowd, he seems to handle it pretty fine and that’s the kind of person he is,” said Pattinson.

“The good thing with Davey is he’s just the same person whether he’s going well or not.

“He’s always bubbly around the team, he’s always helping out, that’s the great thing about him.

Warner was sent to field on the boundary and was greeted with chants of “show us your sandpaper” and “he’s got sandpaper in his hands” prompting him to pull out his empty pockets and show empty hands.

But the 32-year-old could be seen laughing and taking the sledging well.

Steve Smith is the immovable force whom an England bowling attack minus the injured Jimmy Anderson must down on Sunday.

On his first Test return after a year-long ban, Smith scored 144 on day one at Edgbaston.

At the close of play on day three, Smith was up to 46 and will be eyeing another century to extend Australia’s current lead of 34 runs.

And former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Joe Root and co. must go go back to basics to beat Smith.

“Steve Smith has frazzled England in only his second innings of the series,” Vaughan told BBC Sport’s Test Match Special.

“He’s a freak of nature, he reads the ball and the field so well.

“England captain Joe Root is on Plan X – you can understand that, I’d be doing exactly the same.

“You’ve got to bowl full on off stump and just hope one nips back and get him lbw or bowled or one nips away and he’s caught behind,” he said.

“The more you see him and the more you see England try all these different things, I just think you’ve got to break it down to the basics of the game.

“Or maybe they just have to hope Steve Smith has a dodgy breakfast.”
