Man City boss Pep Guardiola sends Liverpool message over Premier League title race

Manchester City manager Guardiola is more focussed on winning the Premier League than the Champions League.

He’d rather have a sustained period of domination in England than gamble everything on knockout fixtures in Europe.

The Spaniard is determined to add a third successive Premier League title to his trophy cabinet next season.

City beat Liverpool to the title last season, despite the Reds losing just a single game in the league – a 2-1 loss to City.

“To be remembered outside England, you have to win in Europe,” Guardiola told The Telegraph.

“It is an important tournament and difficult to win. But I am not going to go to the casino and gamble everything I have in my pocket on seven games.

“I want to be happy for 11 months and the Premier League makes me happy.

“Every game in the league and the cups, when we win I am happy after them. I go to a restaurant feeling better.

“Why am I going to wait until February for seven games and put everything on black? That is too risky.

“The Premier League is always the most important thing because it is every weekend.

“In the Champions League, many things can happen in one or two games and normally when you have history behind you, that helps a lot.

“We will be closer to achieving in Europe when we have more Premier League titles. That is the nice process and the right process to do at Manchester City. But if I could take one thing now, it would definitely be the title.”

The City hierarchy have been determined to win the Champions League to cement their place among Europe’s elite.

But despite participating in the competition seven times since the owners took over, City have only made it to the semi-final on one occasion – a 1-0 loss to Real Madrid over two legs in 2015/2016.

On the other hand, their dominance in the Premier League has seen them win four league titles in seven years.

City also hold the Premier League records for the most points earned in a 20-team season, the largest title-winning margin, the most wins in a season, and the most consecutive wins in the league.
