Galaxy S9 and Note 9 price shock – Why you should probably sell your Samsung phone now

There’s a huge week for Samsung ahead with the Galaxy Note 10 looking certain to be unveiled on August 7.

The big Unpacked event is taking place in New York with the Korean tech firm expected to release an updated phablet with more cameras, improved processor and better battery life.

This release is clearly good for those wanting to take delivery of a better Note device but there is a downside for owners of Samsung’s current flagship.

According to a new report from MusicMagie, these older phones, such as the Note 9 and S9, could see their values plummet in the weeks after the Note 10 is launched.

In fact, the trade-in firm is speculating that the S9 could fall by as much as £60 and he Note 9 by almost £100.

“While cars typically lose approximately 20% when driven off the forecourt, technology items can lose up to an average of 65% once they are taken out of the box, depending on the brand, and it’s well known that Android devices depreciate a lot faster than iOs devices,” said Jon Miller, MusicMagpie’s MD of electronics.

“With the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 launch just around the corner, consumers looking to sell their old handsets can get more money for their old device now rather than after the announcement.”

It’s worth noting that MusicMagie is a trade-in website so it is in their interest to get consumers handing over their phones but this research does correspond with what has happened to Samsung smartphone prices after previous launches.

For example, the Galaxy S9 was worth around £300 earlier in the year but this value has now dropped to around £240.

Here’s what your phone is worth now and what it might be worth in the coming weeks – according to MusicMagpie.

Samsung S6 • NOW WORTH £57.10 – COULD DROP TO £42.83

Samsung S6 Edge • NOW WORTH £61 – COULD DROP TO £45.75
