Star Wars 9 Rise of Skywalker FINAL lightsaber battle revealed? It's NOT who you think

Now that the Sequel Trilogy is back in more ‘traditional’ hands, fans will expect certain things. JJ Abrams has been open about his intentions to honour what came before. The franchise has always had a certain inevitable symmetry. Not just stylistically, but rooted in the idea the Force is always trying to find perfection and keeps circling and repeating until it gets the desired outcome. Until it achieves balance. Which brings the final lightsaber horribly and wonderfully back to two people -– and neither of them is Rey.

First, consider the facts. George Lucas has always said this is a family saga. JJ Abrams has echoed the sentiment, saying the final trilogy and now his final movie will be about the next generation facing the sins of the fathers. Unless there is still a shock revelation coming, this rules out Rey.

Second, think about how the two previous trilogies ended.

Not only is their a pattern, it only leaves one option for the grand finale. It will also show us something never seen before in Star Wars on the big screen. It is going to be magnificent.

The Prequel Trilogy ended with two Light Side lightsabres battling. Anakin had fallen to the Dark Side but had not yet created his sith weapon. The Original Trilogy ended with the clash of Light and Dark Side lightsabers. Yes, Vader killed Palpatine (or did he?), but he didn’t use his lightsaber.

A wonderful new Reddit theory, therefore, explains the Sequel Trilogy must end with the clash of two Dark Side lightsabers.

It says: “PT: Jedi Lightsabers clash — to symbolize the Jedi’s destruction from within. OT: A clash of Sith Lightsaber and Jedi Lightsaber — to symbolize the return of Jedi. ST: A clash of Dark Side and Sith Lightsaber — to symbolize the dark side’s destruction from within.”

Many fans now believe Kylo and Rey will battle early in the film, but the discovery of Palpatine’s return will finally force Kylo to face some terrible truths about his idolisation of Darth Vader and his own fall. This means Kylo will echo Anakin, fallen to the Dark but battling Obi-Wan with a Lights Side weapon. Kylo will be returning to the Light but still using a Dark Side weapon.

STAR WARS 9: ‘LUCASFILM HAS MADE SURE THERE IS NO BACKLASH BY DOING THIS’

The theory adds: “Kylo and Rey will square off against Palpatine, with Palpatine getting the better of Rey, leaving Kylo to finish the job. Master vs student. Reformed dark-sider vs Sith evil incarnate (and preferably Ian McDiarmid’s Palpatine revived and in the flesh here as opposed to some Matt Smith host body. It’s important for Ben to confront the face of his master and the face of his creator for the scene to have emotional weight).”

This theory has logic, nostalgia and respect for the patterns of Star Wars in its favour.
