PS5 price WARNING: Major PlayStation price increase could impact next-gen launch

PlayStation 4 and PS5 console prices could be on the rise, it has been suggested.

Sony has warned that the trade conflict between the US and China could result in higher console prices.

According to a post on the Wall Street Journal, Sony believes that the Trump administration’s plan to impose higher tariffs on goods from China would be bad news for consumers in the US.

Tariffs for Chinese-manufactured goods could be increased by an additional 15%, which would make it more expensive for Sony to export the PS4 and PS5 to America.

Indeed, Sony finance chief Hiroki Totoki said that the company is monitoring its options should the US and China fail to come to an agreement.

“We believe, and therefore have told the U.S. government, that higher tariffs would ultimately damage the US economy,” Totoki warns.

With the PS4 nearing the end of its cycle, the problem is more likely to affect the PS5 when it launches in 2020.

It was recently revealed that the PS5 will support 8K resolution, ray-tracing and have much faster loading times.

The speedy (or non-existent) loading times are possible thanks to the specialised solid-state drive, which will make a huge difference to processing speeds.

In Spider-Man on a PS4 Pro, for example, it can take upwards of 15 seconds to fast travel from one location to another. The PS5, on the other hand, will be able to handle the same task in less than a second.

Worlds can also be rendered at far greater speeds, which should inject more pace into games.

One game that seems certain to take advantage of this extra processing power is Dying Light 2, which has been confirmed as a cross-gen release.

This means not only will it launch on PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, but it will also come to the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett.

Asked about the possibility of a cross-gen release, a Techland spokesperson said: “Techland always has an eye on the latest new toys!

“To be more specific – yes, the plan since the beginning of production has been to make Dying Light 2 a cross-generation title.”
