Top Gun 2: Kelly McGillis ‘I was NOT asked to return as I’m too old and fat for Hollywood’

The 62-year-old is best known for playing Tom Cruise character Maverick’s love interest Charlie Blackwood in 1986’s Top Gun. However, McGillis has not been asked to reprise her role, with Jennifer Connelly catching the eye of Maverick in Top Gun 2. According to the star, she reckons she wasn’t asked because she’s too “old and fat” for the Hollywood scene where, she seems to imply, actors don’t actually look their age. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, McGillis said: “Oh my God, no.”

The Top Gun star continued: “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age appropriate for what my age is and that is not what that whole scene is about.

“To me, I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”

McGillis admitted she still hasn’t seen the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick and isn’t sure if she’ll see it in cinemas.

She continued: “I dunno. I mean I guess it depends on what kind of reviews it gets.”

She added: “I can’t project what I would or wouldn’t do in the future.

“Movies are odd things. I don’t really keep in touch with anybody.

“I think I’ve spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”

Top Gun: Maverick is released in UK cinemas on July 17, 2020.
