PS4 sales update is great news for PS Plus and PSN free game fans

It has now been confirmed that over 100 million PS4 consoles have been sold worldwide.

And that’s massive news for both Sony and their various PlayStation businesses.

The consoles themselves probably don’t generate a massive amount of revenue by themselves for Sony.

But when you factor in the software sales, the digital purchases on the PlayStation Store and the various subscriptions, like PS Plus, things start to look a lot different.

Shouldering the production costs means that Sony can expand how many people play games on their PlayStation platform.

And that means taking a cut of the sales available to them, as well as whatever opportunities present themselves.

A Senior Analyst at Niko Partners shared the big news, confirming that the PS4 has now broken some important records.

“Sony has shipped 100 million PlayStation 4’s as of June 30th 2019,” the analyst reveals.

“A total of 3.2 million consoles were shipped during the April to June quarter. This makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in.

“Faster than both the PS2 and Wii which were just behind. It took PS2 a total of five years and 9 months. PS4 was just 5 years and 7 months.”

Adding: “Full game digital download share surpassed 50% for the first time this past quarter.

“In other words, 53% of all games purchased for PS4 in the second quarter of 2019 were digital copies.

“That’s up from 43% during the same quarter last year.”

And this news is great for existing customers who are currently playing games on the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Not only does this make the PS4 clear leader in the current market but it also provides Sony with a massive install base.

This will no doubt draw more games into its path, perhaps offering new opportunities in the future.

Will higher-profile titles now be offered as part of the ongoing PS Plus program each month?

The strength of the PSN doesn’t appear to be tailing off yet, before the launch of the PS5. But we won’t know for certain until more data is shared by Sony on the state of the PlayStation Network.

And this is just the first piece of exciting news being shared this week regarding the PS4.

Tomorrow, Sony is expected to reveal their official PS Plus lineup for August 2019.

This will include two PS4 games that will be available to download as part of your membership.

These titles will remain part of your digital game library for as long as you have an active subscription with PlayStation.

However, as soon as you choose to end this, these games will become locked until you reactivate your account.

The good news is that you don’t lose your progress, meaning you purchase the game and continue your adventure if that’s what you choose.

For now, PS Plus gamers can download and play Detroit: Become Human and Horizon Chase Turbo on PS4.

These will be replaced next week, August 6, with new PS Plus free games for PlayStation 4 console owners.
