Holidays to Spain this year come with a number of warnings, including terrorism fears.
While it is a hugely popular desitnation for Britons, the chances of terror attacks seems fairly high, a fact that may come as a shock to many.
“Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain,” according to the UK government.
The Foreign and Commonwalth Office (FCO) issues travel advice on its website.

It says: “Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. The Spanish authorities take measures to protect visitors, but you should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities.
“On 17/18 August 2017, there were 2 terrorist-related incidents where vehicles were driven directly at pedestrians, resulting in injuries and loss of life.
“These were in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona and Cambrils, near Salou (100km southwest of Barcelona).
“There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”
What other risks are there for travellers? The FCO warns: “Forest fires occur frequently in Spain (including Spanish islands) during the summer months. Take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas.
“Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished, don’t light barbecues and don’t leave empty bottles behind.”
British nationals in particular have been warned about the risks of falling from balconies.
It said: “There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies. Many of these incidents have involved British nationals and have had a devastating impact on those involved and their loved ones.
“Don’t take unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs.”

Greece
The FCO said: “Terrorist attacks in Greece can’t be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreigners.”
Turkey
In Turkey terror attacks are “very likely” the UK government warns.
It said: “Most terrorist attacks have taken place in the south and east of the country and in Ankara and Istanbul. While there is a potential that citizens from western countries may be targets or caught up in attacks, particularly in the major cities, attacks are most likely to target the Turkish state, civilians and demonstrations.”
Travellers should also avoid certain parts of Turkey entirely, namely the border with Syria.
The government warns: “The FCO advise against all travel to areas within 10km of the border with Syria, except the city of Kilis. The FCO advise against all but essential travel to the remaining areas of Sirnak, Kilis (including Kilis city) and Hatay provinces.”
As for natural disasters: “Many parts of Turkey are subject to earthquakes and tremors.”
Egypt
Once again, “terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt.”
They are more likely to take place around religious sites during religious festivals.
Accidents on the road are common due to “poor road conditions, dangerous driving and non-enforcement of traffic laws.”
Tunisia
“Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia and there have been a number of attacks in recent years,” the FCO warns.
There has been a state of emergency in force since November 2015.
