Judy Murray, 59, was less than impressed with Richard Gasquet’s, 33, decision to not match his underwear with his shorts. After spotting a photo of the tennis player’s ensemble, Andy Murray’s mum spoke out about why she takes issue with tennis players wearing dark coloured undergarments in a cheeky post on the social media platform. The former Strictly Come Dancing star shared the snap of Richard with her 262,000 followers this afternoon, showing the French sportsman mistakenly revealing his underwear, which became apparent when his white shorts got drenched in sweat during a match. Judy added the caption: “If I was the boss of @ATP_Tour I’d make it mandatory for the players to wear white underwear with white shorts.
“And I’d task my commercial manager with bringing in @marksandspencer as a sponsor for it #pethate.
She concluded by apologising to Richard for sharing the photo, writing: “PS sorry Dicky G x.”(sic)
Fans took to the comments section to share their thoughts about Judy’s idea.
One wrote: “Would you volunteer to be chief knicker checker? Could I be your deputy?”
“Flesh coloured would be even better – no VPL at all then! But I don’t think they make them for men…”, another suggested.
However, some disagreed with Judy’s opinion, with one writing: “Me and my husband having examined this photo long and hard have to disagree and wonder if you’d feel the same if it was Feliciano Lopez.”
A second wondered: “Wouldn’t sweaty white underwear be very see through?”
Elsewhere, Judy opened up about her nervous reaction while watching her son Andy play at Wimbledon.
Speaking before the former number one champion attempted to secure his comeback at the tennis tournament, she said: “I am like a duck.
“I am seemingly calm on the surface but I am paddling furiously underneath. It’s all a bluff.
“Andy is a worrier like I am but he is such a fighter and you can never say never with him.
“He has found a way through the hip resurfacing operation and he will do whatever he can to give himself that chance to get back. He is pumped up and competing again.
“He is a real worker and has gone through the monotonous grind of rehab and paid every attention to detail. He has that mentality that he can do it.”
Andy revealed at the Australian Open in January that he was about to undergo surgery that could have marked the end of his career.
Judy said at the time: “It was so great to see him last week [winning a doubles match at the private Hurlingham Club in west London] because in January we weren’t sure if it was possibly going to be his last match after his hip surgery but he is so happy to be out there.
“It’s Andrew’s goal to try to get back on the single circuit again. It’s still quite early days and we will have to see what happens. I think he has every good chance of being at Wimbledon next year.”
