A 2-year-old boy is missing after his parents died in an apparent murder-suicide in Montana.
Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak were reported missing on June 11 to police in Medford, Oregon.
Police say the couple was involved in a burglary in 2018 that resulted in criminal convictions. Janiak was scheduled to begin her jail sentence on the day she was reported missing.
Authorities say the couple was last seen with their 2-year old son, Aiden Salcido, on security footage in a Walmart on June 4 in Medford, a city in southern Oregon close to the California border, according to NBC Montana. Police say the couple purchased camping gear.
Family members told police that Salcido, Janiak, and their son were homeless, often camping along trails in Medford, and that Janiak suffered from mental health issues.
On July 25, police in Kalispell, Montana, a small city in the northern part of the state wedged between the Flathead National Forest and Kootenai National Forest, stopped Salcido and Janiak in their car. Police were suspicious that the two were giving false identities. The couple eventually fled in their car, and local authorities spiked the tires on the vehicle to stop it.
Police found Salcido and Janiak dead in the car in an apparent murder-suicide. Janiak had a gunshot wound to her head and Salcido had what police determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Their son was not with them.
The Medford police say the FBI is helping with the case.
