Jeffrey Epstein under 24-hour watch in jail after ‘suicide attempt’ ahead of court date

The Billionaire, who has been accused of paedophilia, was found injured on the floor of his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre on Monday. While it is not clear if the injuries were self-inflicted, Epstein has been put on watch as a precautionary measure, CBS News reported. His injuries are reportedly not life-threatening.

The 66-year-old financier was found by guards sprawled on the floor of cell as his face was reportedly “blue”.

Law enforcement sources said he was semi-conscious, crying and had bruising around his neck.

Inmates in the prison have been questioned as an assault hasn’t been ruled out.

According to CBS News, Epstein used his clothes in the alleged attempt at his life.

The reports come as Epstein was arrest on July 6 and charged with sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy which he was pled not guilty to.

Epstein was recently denied bail, a move his lawyers plan to appeal according to a court notice made public on Tuesday.

Epstein was expected to ask the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the judge’s July 18 rejection of his request to remain under house arrest in his $77 million (£61 million) mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The charges, concerning alleged misconduct from at least 2002 to 2005, were announced more than a decade after Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges in Florida.

In denying him bail, US District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan said the government had shown by clear and convincing evidence that Epstein would pose a danger to the community if released pending trial.

Epstein was friends with some of the world’s biggest names, including Prince Andrew, and he hosted former US President Bill Clinton at a private Caribbean island.

But responding to the charges, Mr Clinton said he “knows nothing” about Epstein’s “terrible crimes”.
