WARNING: Huge spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead.
The Marvel epic included a small number of high-profile exits, with Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johnasson and Chris Evans being the biggest three.
Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff – aka Black Widow – died when she sacrificed her own life so Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) could obtain the Soul Stone.
Now, the star has spoken out about her exit – which will be very slightly undone when she returns for a prequel movie next spring.
“I thought [the prequel] would make it easier,” she told Yahoo!.
“And then when I was standing there with Renner on the edge of the cliff, it wasn’t easy at all.
“It was really, really sad. I just felt overwhelmingly sad about it. It just felt like a big loss. So no, it didn’t make it any easier.”
She added: “I’m pretty sentimental, so I’d go, ‘Guys, this is it!’
“And they’re like, ‘You’re getting your own film, it’s fine.’ But I was like, ‘It’s not the same.’
“It’s brutal. It’s brutal and sad, and it’s bittersweet.”
Black Widow was formally announced at San Diego Comic Con last weekend, along with its principle cast.
David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O.T. Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz are all aboard, and in a TV interview, Johansson was coy on whether Renner will be in the mix too.
“My lips are sealed. But you’ve got to wait and see,” she grinned on GMA.
Hawkeye fans already have a lot to look forward to: Renner is reprising the character in his own Disney+ TV series.
The MCU is also getting new adventures for Eternals and Shang-Chi; plus the return of Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, and of Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
Black Widow is out on May 1, 2020.
