OnePlus 7 will challenge the Mate 20 Pro with a radical camera upgrade

OnePlus 7 Pro released back in May and is easily the most premium handset the Shenzhen-based tech giant has ever made – the device comes with one of the best displays on a smartphone, turbocharged internals and a gorgeous design.

The flagship also flaunts a triple camera system that is the most diverse on a OnePlus smartphone to date.

OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a 48-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto module and a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle system that are each extremely capable in their own right.

The 7 Pro, like a number of its rivals such as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, comes with a dedicated night mode within its camera software to help take brighter and more detailed photos in low-light conditions.

Dubbed Nightscape, the mode requires the user to hold the 7 Pro steady for a few seconds when enabled while the phone takes a number of different shots at higher exposures before stitching them all together to deliver a final image.

One of the tool’s biggest limitations though is the fact it can only be harnessed on the OnePlus 7 Pro’s 48-megapixel main sensor.

This comes in stark contrast to Android rivals such as the Mate 20 Pro that allows Android fans to use its respective night mode in every one of its sensors individually, increasing the phone’s camera system diversity overall.

However, it seems OnePlus looks set to radically improve the 7 Pro’s camera system by allowing it to harness Nightscape with each individual lens.

GSMArena recently visited the Chinese firm’s camera lab in Taiwan and spoke with its Image Product Manager, Zake Zhang.

The outlet asked him if the firm plans to allow Nightscape to “also work on the other cameras on the OnePlus 7 Pro”.

In response, Zhang confirmed the OEM is working on delivering such functionality.

He said: “We are working on bringing the Nightscape feature to the other cameras in a future update.”

If and when OnePlus does issue the photography improvement to the 7 Pro, it would surely increase the diversity of the phone’s camera system and challenge the Huawei Mate 20 Pro in the process.

Zhang also spoke to GSMArena about the areas in which he believes he feels OnePlus can further improve the 7 Pro’s camera performance.

The Image Product Manager declared the firm is working on bettering its scene detection.

He went on: “We have always been improving our software with updates. What we are focusing on right now is how we can maximise the multi-frame with the HDR and scene detection and also how we can increase the numbers that make the phone look good on paper while also making it more visually appealing to people.

“We will also be focusing on our scene detection, which is the basis for a lot of our algorithms.”
