England skittled by Ireland for 85 in horror morning at Lord's – Tim Murtagh takes five

England headed to Lord’s in high spirits after winning the World Cup for the first time on the same ground just over a week ago.

It’s Ireland’s first ever Test match in England with Lord’s hosting a four-day Test.

But just over an hour into the opening day, that famous Sunday already felt a long time ago.

England won the toss and elected to bat on a hot morning in London with Test debutant Jason Roy opening the batting alongside Surrey team-mate Rory Burns.

Roy was the first to go, caught at slip by Paul Stirling, for just five.

Joe Denly appeared to be settling things down but he was next to go having scored a quick-fire 23.

And then it was a procession.

Burns was next, edging behind as he chased a wide one in the 11th over.

Captain Joe Root was gone in the next over as he was trapped lbw by Mark Adair for just two.

Jonny Bairstow lasted just six balls before Murtagh slipped one through the gate and had him bowled.

Middlesex star Murtagh, on his home ground, got his fourth with Moeen Ali caught behind.

The Irish bowler then got his fifth, with Chris Woakes lbw. Murtagh ended his opening spell of nine overs with remarkable figures of 5-13.

And Boyd Rankin followed up with two wickets of his own, with Stuart Broad gone for three and Sam Curran then caught out.

Olly Stone, on Test debut, was the last man out for 19 – the second highest score – in the last over before lunch.

And former England captain Alastair Cook was as amazed as anyone.

He said on Test Match Special: “I have no idea what is going on.

“Just 10 days after the high of the World Cup to this.

“Tim Murtagh has bowled beautifully but England just needed to get through the first hour and I think this will have turned out to be a good wicket to bat on.”
