What Man Utd have done to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could save millions in transfer market

Red Devils chiefs have promoted head of academy Nicky Butt to the role of head of first team development.

And the Class of ’92 hero will be in charge of helping United’s top youngsters step up to the next level as they attempt to make the most of their potential.

Butt, who played alongside the likes of David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, will report directly to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to ensure prospects get a crack at making it with the first team.

And he will also continue to influence the way the Manchester United academy operates, as well as having in a say in broader club decisions.

Former midfielder Butt has been involved at United during a period which has seen the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard make the step up from their academy.

And he will be hoping to help save Ed Woodward and co. from having to splash out on expensive transfers by bringing other prodigies through as United look to continue their run of naming a youth team graduate in every first-team squad since 1937.

Mason Greenwood and Tahith Chong are among the young hopefuls trying to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for the coming season.

The striker and winger could, respectively, allow United to divert funds into strengthening other areas of Solskjaer’s squad.

Butt’s promotion has come as United have appointed Nick Cox in his old position of head of academy.

United executive vice-chairman Woodward believes United’s decision to shake things up will pay dividends.

“These changes will further enhance the excellent work and results we have seen over many decades in our Academy system and enable us to continue our proud traditions of producing world-class players capable of playing and excelling in the first team,” Woodward said.

Butt, likewise, is excited by the opportunity to help youngsters follow in his footsteps.

“Manchester United is in my DNA and this is a very proud moment for me as I take on this new role,” Butt said.

“I am passionate about nurturing, developing and coaching the talent we have here to become top players at this club.

“Under Ole’s leadership, our vision will ensure that we continue to provide the right environment for our young players to thrive in.”

United have enjoyed a strong start to pre-season, during which Greenwood and Chong’s performances have turned heads.

And Solskjaer is unlikely to be put off throwing them into the mix next season if they continue to impress.

Next up for United is Thursday’s International Champions Cup showdown with Premier League rivals Tottenham in Shanghai.
