Billy Connolly: 'Welcome news' Comedian to come out of retirement amid Parkinson's battle

Billy Connolly, 76, is reportedly coming out of retirement and is gearing up to appear in his own ITV show. The Scottish comedian has reportedly landed his own television show titled Billy Connolly’s Great American Trail. The veteran comic will be travelling across the States in the three-part series. He will follow the route the Scottish immigrants took after they first landed in America in the early 18th century.

Billy will chat with experts and descendants of immigrants along the way.

A show insider told The Sun: “Billy admitted earlier this year that Parkinson’s was taking it’s toll and he could no longer cope with live performances.

“But after ITV producers offered him a new adventure in the US, where he has spent half his life living, he decided it was too good to miss.

“He’s been secretly working on the project and filmed footage for the show in March and June. It’s going to be welcome news for his fans who thought he was going to be retiring for good.”

Billy’s Great American Trail is set to be on screens in the autumn.

Express.co.uk have contacted Billy Connolly’s representatives for comment.

The news comes after it was revealed Sir Billy’s final stand-up tour will be shown in Vue cinemas across the UK, according to The Scotsman.

As part of a one-night-only screening his stand-up routine will be showcased in October.

Cinema-goers will get the chance to see a filmed performance of Billy Connolly: The Sex Life of Bandages which was one of his final shows before he announced his retirement.

Earlier this year, the comic gave fans an update on his Parkinson’s disease where he said he wasn’t “losing it” but has to cut down on his work schedule.

Speaking on his documentary, Made in Scotland, he said: “I haven’t started losing it but there’s no denying that I’m 75 and I have got Parkinson’s.

“I’ve cut back on my work but the fame remains and I’ve never known anything like it.”

In April, the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant who is also known as The Big Yin, was joined by his wife Pamela Stephenson, 69 at the Grand Marshall annual New York City Tartan Day Parade.

The couple, who have been married since 1989 and have three children together, wore coordinating outfits for the parade which marches from 45th Street to 55th Street up Sixth Avenue.

Billy appeared in high spirits as he waved to the crowd as he sported a traditional red tartan kit.

The Tartan Day parade is an annual event which takes place on the official National Tartan Day in America – a day that recognises contributions made to the country by Scottish-Americans.
