Avengers Endgame: ‘Captain America almost collaborated with Red Skull’ says screenwriters

The two arch-nemeses haven’t faced each other since Captain America: The First Avenger. However, Avengers Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed that one draft of the script almost saw Cap having to collaborate with Red Skull for the Soul Stone on Vormir. Speaking at San Diego Comic Con, Markus said: “We wrote a big document that was everything you could possibly do in these movies. In there, is the Red Skull is clearly alive… He’s awesome!”

According to CBR, he continued: “Let’s find a way to use him. Let’s tie this whole thing together…

“We did send him to space and send him a way very much on purpose…

“There’s a fascinating one-act play to be written of Captain America going to Red Skull.

“Never wrote it. In the manifesto document, there was one theory that [it was] Cap who goes to space… and he has to collaborate with Red Skull to get the Stone.”

Of course, fans have noticed that Captain America did come across Red Skull on Vormir off-screen.

At the end of Avengers Endgame, Steve Rogers was given the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to return them to their original points in the past.

Of course, Steve had only previously been to 2012 New York and the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in 1970.

But this time he will also have had to head to 2013 Asgard and 2014 Morag and Vormir too, before travelling back to 1945 to be with Peggy.

Let’s not forget that Vormir, where the Soul Stone was obtained, was guarded by the Keeper, Red Skull.

On this off-screen meeting, Avengers Endgame directors The Russo Brothers said: “Red Skull would probably put the Soul Stone back to its location, and wait for the next unfortunate stone seeker to make a sacrifice. Cap and Red Skull probably won’t fight.

“It’s because it’s his mission to return the Stone to its original place.

“The Red Skull is also no longer the same Red Skull from The First Avenger. He is more like a ghost, you could almost say he’s a completely different entity now.

“He only exists to guard the stone, his past conscious may or may not exist anymore.”
