Spain weather warning: Ibiza, Majorca and Madrid alert as temps to hit 104F – shock chart

Thousands of sunseekers are flying out of the UK this week heading for Spain’s popular resorts just as the temperatures start to soar. Forecasters predict the heatwave will be at its peak until Thursday when a new weather front from the Atlantic will bring temperatures back down to more comfortable seasonal norms. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said 41 Spanish provinces could expect dangerously high temperatures with 12 being placed on Orange Alert – a significant risk of plus 40C (104F) thermometer readings.

These include Jaén, Huesca, Zaragoza, Toledo, Ávila, Salamanca, Lleida, Madrid, Navarra, Badajoz, Cáceres and La Rioja.

Officials said 29 other provinces – including the popular holiday islands of Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera as well as tourist hotspots such as Barcelona, Gerona, Tarragona, Seville – are on Yellow Alert.

The Spanish warnings come as Britain is also braced for a sweltering week as the continental heatwave drifts north.

Public Health England and the Met Office have jointly issued a level two “alert and readiness” warning ahead of temperatures hitting 37C (95F).

Thermometers will rocket from today with stifling humidity threatening to make it feel close to 45C (113F) in parts.

Heavy, humidity-laden air will waft up from France and Spain as the Continent braces for its potentially killer heatwave.

While it will not be as hot in the UK, health experts have warned elderly and vulnerable people to take extra care through the coming days.

Malcolm Booth, chief executive of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners (NFOP), said: “Weather forecasts predict another spell of very hot weather on the way and it is important to remember that this can be as dangerous as cold in the winter.”

The 36.7C (98.06F) record for the month could be under threat over the coming days if the heat holds out until the weekend, the Met Office said.

Southern Britain will see the highest temperatures over the next week with rain bringing a fresher feel to the north through the start of the week.

The whole of the UK could be baking in the hottest temperatures since last summer by the middle of the week, according to meteorologist Sophie Yeomans.

She said: “The hot weather is coming up originally from Africa and through France and Spain which are going to see heatwave conditions again this week.

“By Wednesday we expect temperatures in the UK to reach 34C (93.2F), during the second half of the week it is uncertain whether there will be a trend back to fresher conditions.”
