Shane Lowry in tears as he dedicates sensational Open win to his parents

Lowry was the picture of delight as he made his way up the 18th green, knowing the claret jug was there waiting for him after sinking his final putt.

He soaked in the atmosphere with his trademark smile etched across his face as the fans continuing to chant.

But then came the shining moment as he sunk his par putt and raised his arms aloft as he joined elite company as an Open champion.

His wife, Wendy, and daughter, Iris, were there on the side ready to embrace the 32-year-old on the green along with his father Brendan and mum Bridget.

The usual protocols followed as Lowry went off to sign his card before coming back out to the cheering crowds to be handed the famous claret jug.

Lowry listed off the people he wanted to thank for their continued support, but had to briefly compose himself when mentioning his parents.

“My family, what can I say,” he said.

“My mum and dad… [paused to compose himself] they sacrificed so much for me when I was younger and I’m so happy I can hand them this trophy tonight.”

He added: “My wife and my little girl Iris, to have them here today is just extra special. I don’t know what to say.

“Last but not least but the volunteers and all the fans, thank you so much.

“This one’s for you.”
