After San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, it’s finally official that Johansson will be reprising the role of Natasha Romanoff in the popular character’s first solo movie.
Black Widow is already in production and is set for release next May, with the stellar cast announced over the weekend.
But speaking to Good Morning America, Johansson was pushed on whether a certain other Avenger, who has strong ties to her character, will also pop up.
The host asked: “Obviously Jeremy Renner’s character and you had a very deep emotional connection – will any of that storyline continue in the Black Widow story?”
Indeed, Clint Barton – aka Hawkeye – was there when Black Widow made her ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, and the two have a lot of history.
With a glint in her eye, Johansson joked of the secrecy around the project in response: “That’s when you see the gun come out – they’re take you out first, and then I’m going out second!”
She added coyly: “My lips are sealed. But you’ve got to wait and see.”
Should Hawkeye be absent from the movie, surely a flat-out “no” would have been easier – so is Johansson hinting that he WILL be in the film?
Hawkeye fans already have a lot to look forward to: Renner is reprising the character in his own Disney+ TV series.
The MCU is also getting new adventures for Eternals and Shang-Chi; plus the return of Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, and of Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
But Black Widow is the next film out, and Johansson also told GMA: “I think the biggest surprise for me is that the strength is in her vulnerability.
“That has been very liberating to make that discovery; it’s given me a lot more choices.
“While she I think has to put on a brave face in some capacity, as a leader, she also is OK with her feelings, and with expressing them.”
And of going alone, she added: “It’s a little bit scary not having the cushion of my fellow Avengers around!
“I hate to keep using the word vulnerable but you feel like you put yourself out there in a different way because the character stands on their own.”
Black Widow is out on May 1, 2020.
