Sporting Lisbon expect Man Utd to seal Bruno Fernandes transfer next week

Sporting Lisbon star Fernandes is understood to be a Manchester United transfer target for the summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets Premier League title glory at the first time of asking.

The Red Devils are a little short in the middle of the park following the exits of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini to PSG and Shandong Lueng Taishan respectively.

Manchester United have spent much of the summer chasing a deal for Fernandes but, so far, have been unable to capture the Portugal international.

Yet Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has claimed that Sporting expect United to seal a deal for the 24-year-old next week.

“Manchester United had another contact for Bruno Fernandes,” he tweeted.

“Sporting confident to close the deal next week, when it is expected a new meeting.”

Should United seal a deal for Fernandes, then he would become the third signing of the summer for the Red Devils.

Daniel James was the first to arrive, touching down from Championship side Swansea in the middle of June.

And the Wales international was then followed by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who swapped Crystal Palace for Old Trafford in a £50million deal.

Fernandes hit 31 goals for Sporting last term as the club finished third in the Primeira Liga table.

And he also starred as Portugal beat Switzerland and Holland to win the Nations League at the start of the summer.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer admitted United were looking at bolstering their squad ahead of the new campaign.

The United boss, whose side beat Inter Milan 1-0 today, said: “Well, as I said, we are working on one or two.

“My objective here we have got to get ready for the games and the training sessions.”

Solskjaer also recently admitted that United were looking to close the gap on Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

“The Premier League is a very competitive league,” the Norwegian said.

“Our aim is to focus on ourselves, we have to be better and be our only focus. I am sure we will get closer to the top.”

United start their Premier League campaign against Chelsea on August 11.
