Netflix's Witcher Series Won't Adapt The Games' Storylines

Netflix has been clear that its upcoming Witcher series is based primarily on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, but it’s hard not to think of CD Projekt Red’s trilogy when looking at stills of Geralt. However, during a recent interview, the people behind the show are making it clear the plot of the games’ aren’t making it to their series anytime soon.

When asked by The Wrap whether the team would ever look to the games for inspiration, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissirch gave a stern answer. “Extreme long vision is no, we will not start adapting the games,” she said. ““I can only attack one season at a time, I’m so excited for this one, the rest kind of makes my mind explode right now. If someone says ‘what happens in Season 7,’ sure I have thoughts. Fingers crossed, we get there.”

That might a little disappointing to some fans, but this sounds like the better deal overall. While I love the Witcher games, there’s a ton of backstory and arcs to dive into, spread across eight books, for Netflix to explore, which means they likely won’t be starved for material soon. I’d prefer to see these stories adapted to screen before rehashing plotlines I’ve already seen play out.

While you wait for the series to premiere this fall, check out the latest trailer.
