Lion King review: Is Disney reboot worth it? First reactions as The Lion King is released

Disney’s 1994 Lion King movie is one of the most beloved creations to ever come out of the House of Mouse. The live-action remake has been hailed as a visual masterpiece by critics but what does the public think? These are the first reactions to the Lion King reboot now it is out in cinemas.

The Lion King is the latest Disney classic to get a modern makeover.

Fans of the 1994 original have been excited to see how stars including Beyoncé, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino), Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner breathe life into the hallowed animation.

While the movie has received a visual overhaul the new film sticks closely to the original plot.

Actor James Earl Jones, who played Mufasa in the first Lion King return to play Simba’s dad again in the new film.

The Lion King remake had its world premiere in LA on July 10.

The first reactions were generally positive and the film received three or four-star reviews from most critics.

One criticism of the film has been that the hyperreal CGI does not quite carry off lion’s mouths speaking like humans – but you can’t have everything.

The movie’s score features original Elton John ballads, some of which have been rerecorded by Beyonce and Donald Glover.

Superstar Beyonce also made a track “Spirit”, especially for the film.

First reactions

Reactions to the Lion King reboot on Twitter since it was released in cinemas yesterday have been mixed.

Twitter user @SrkianDas wrote: “A Fabulous Family Entertaining Movie. Voice Over Goosebumps. #AryanKhan Voice Over Superb…just love it. Beautiful Story – Emotion, Comic Timing, Romance- just Superb.”

But @beautyNbeastin put: “It’s cool they remake these Disney movies and they’re not cartoons for us adults but I’ve noticed my daughter is not entertained she fell asleep during The Lion King and damn near couldn’t wait until it was over.”

@Daveveng tweeted: “Great film still with the same amazing message. See The Lion King.”

But @IanJay123x said it was lacking, they wrote: “The Lion King gets a solid 7.5/10.

“It was visually pleasing. It was nostalgic. It was an experience.

“The Lion King (cartoon) is one of my favourite movies.

“It left a great deal to be desired.”

@kathleenjaney couldn’t help compare the remake to the original, she put: “As much as I love Donald Glover and Beyonce and several of the other voice actors and actresses, can we talk about how the original Lion King was better.”
